Large Scale Hydropower Dams and Climate Change: Threats to People’s Livelihoods and Responsibility of the ASEAN community

Room3, Indonesia Culture Center, Dili, Timor- Leste on 04 Aug 2016: A thematic workshop on “Large Scale Hydropower Dams and Climate Change: Threats to People’s Livelihoods and Responsibility of the ASEAN Community” was organized on August 4, 2016 at Timor – Leste through a platform of ASEAN Civil Society Conference / ASEAN People’s Forum 2016. The workshop was hosted and co-organized by the NGO Forum on Cambodia (NGOF), Cambodian Volunteers for Society (CVS) and Fisheries Action Coalition Team (FACT) from Cambodia, Vietnam Rivers Network (VRN) and Centre for Social Research and Development from Vietnam, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) from Indonesia and Focus on Global South, TERRA and International Rivers (IR) from Thailand. There are 62 delegates (21 women) from civil society organizations in ASEAN countries and development partners from other countries were participated. the main objective of the workshop were focused on: 1) to raise awareness and share information learned on transboundary issues such as the case studies of hydropower dams on the Mekong mainstream and tributaries, including Don Sahong, Xayaburi in Laos and Lower Sesan 2 in Cambodia 2) to strengthen existing networks of committed organizations in the region who work on hydropower dams issues by sharing common concerns and strategies on dam campaigns and 3) to provide recommendations on hydropower dams on the Mekong Mainstream and its tributaries to be integrated into the recommendation of ASEAN Peoples’ Forum to ASEAN community.

There are 431.683 hectares of land areas stretched in Stung Treng, Kampong Thom, Kratie and Prea Vihear provinces was included as Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary by sub-decree on Prey Lang, issued on 9 May, 2016 by Prime-minister Hun Sen. In purpose to ensure the maintenance of wildlife habitat and ecosystems, and to ensure specific conditions for certain types of plant, wildlife and biodiversity. Provide products and services for the sustainable use of natural. Promote participation of local communities and the public to contribute to the management, protection and conservation of biological diversity and natural resources in the region. Ministry of environment is the host of initiative idea and sub-decree also provided the right for this institution on managing this wildlife sanctuary with cooperation to ministry and involved institution of all four provinces.

On Thursday 21st July 2016: the NGO Forum on Cambodia conducted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Phnom Penh Ecumenical Diakonia Center (PPEDC) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This meeting was a full day meeting among NGO Forum’s members, network members, and relevant stakeholders from 7:30am to 5:00pm. There were 108 participants (42 women) participated in this meeting.
The meeting was opened and welcomed by Mr. Yin Dara, Chairperson of the Management Committee (MC) of the NGO Forum on Cambodia (NGOF) and the Program officer of Forum Syd. Firstly, he thanked all government officers, NGOF members, network members, INGOs and NGOs that came to join this AGM today. 19-20 July 2016, Angkor Miracle Hotel, Siem Reap Province:
The NGO Forum on Cambodia (NGOF) in collaboration with relevant stakeholders organized a national workshop on Systematic Land Registration (SLR) and Indigenous Communal Land Titling (CLT). The two-day workshop brought over 140 active participants together in accordance with the planned agenda. The invited participants were representatives of civil society organizations, national and sub-national government officials, communities, researchers and academia.

On 7th July2016: NGO exposure visit to China Huadian Lower Stung Russei Chrum Hydro-Electric Project in Koh Kong province.
